The music of To Kill a Mockingbird
Music created for Tennessee Repertory Theatre’s Fall 2010 production of To Kill A Mockingbird, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Nashville, TN, Directed by René D. Copeland.
Having scored for live performances of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory and The Thanksgiving Visitor, this work completes a musical trilogy for these stories of love and hardship authored by childhood companions and lifelong friends. While acknowledging the spirit and sense of place evoked by these stories, I also wanted to nod to Elmer Bernstein’s classic score of the 1962 movie version of To Kill a Mockingbird. Presented here are the various themes as individual pieces culminating in a tranquil medley woven together with sounds (songs) of nature–the music cue used to welcome our audience into the theatre each night.
