Gifts of Cash (Checks, Credit Cards, Electronic Transfer)

If you plan to make a contribution or pledge to Tennessee Rep during this season (July 2011–June 2012) and wish to receive a tax deduction in 2011, you should make your contribution or pay your pledge in full by the end of 2011. When you itemize deductions, gifts of cash completed by December 31 will reduce income tax on up to 50% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

Gifts of Appreciated Securities

Gifts of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and certain other properties that have increased in value and that have been owned for more than one year can result in additional tax savings. Such gifts are generally deductible at their fair market value on the date of the gift and can reduce tax on up to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). In addition, no tax will be owed on the capital gain that would be realized in the event of a sale of the securities. Because Tennessee Rep is a 501(c)(3) organization, it incurs no tax upon sale of the securities and thus receives the full value of the gift.

If you are considering a gift of securities that has lost value, you may be able to sell the securities, make a contribution from the cash proceeds, and apply the realized loss on your 2010 tax return.

Please be sure to check with your financial advisor to insure the best strategy for your personal circumstances before making gifts of appreciated securities or engaging in other securities transactions for purposes of supporting Tennessee Rep. Gifts of securities being transferred must be made by December 31, 2011, in order for you to realize tax savings in 2011.
